Creating a New Container

Creating a container in Portmasters is a straightforward process for registering container units into your system.

Step-by-step process

  1. Navigate to the Manage section and click on the Container tab.
  2. Click the + New Container button in the top right corner.
  3. The New Container dialog will appear.

Required fields

Line

  • Select the shipping line that owns or operates this container.
  • Use the dropdown menu to choose from available shipping lines.
  • The shipping line must already be created in your system.

Container number

  • Enter the unique container identification number.
  • Standard format follows ISO 6346 (4 letters + 7 digits).
  • This number is marked on the container and used for tracking throughout its journey.

Size and type

  • Select the container size and type from the dropdown menu.
  • Common options include:
    • 20’ Standard (20-foot dry container)
    • 40’ Standard (40-foot dry container)
    • 20’ High Cube (20-foot with extra height)
    • 40’ High Cube (40-foot with extra height)
    • etc.

Tare weight

  • Select or enter the tare weight of the empty container.
  • Tare weight is the weight of the container itself without cargo.
  • Measured in kilograms (kg).
  1. Click the See the preview button to review your container information before saving.

Preview and confirm

After clicking See the preview, you’ll see a summary of your container registration.

Preview displays:

  • Container name – The container number you entered (e.g., NA-1232-65).
  • Line – The shipping line name (e.g., Hyundai Dream).
  • Type of container – The selected size and type (e.g., 20' Standard).
  • Tare weight – The container’s empty weight (e.g., 100).

The preview dialog shows the message: “Please check all information before publishing it.”

Final actions

  • Click Edit to go back and make changes to any field.
  • Click Save to register the container.

Once saved, you’ll see a confirmation message:
“The container successfully created. You can see and manage the container in the container tab on manage.”
